The Maxtend CA system is the premium optimised 'One-Trip' active control system managing the atmosphere inside a standard marine refrigerated container.

Optimum setpoint is instantly established by gas flushing then the balance between oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are accurately maintained to create the optimum atmosphere for extending the storage life of produce. Eliminating the need for a dedicated controlled atmosphere container fleet and the associated logistics.

Maxtend® CA is the perfect solution for transporting your precious produce to market. An individual tailored system to the optimum atmosphere to maximise produce life well beyond standard air storage methods.

Suitable for a wide range of commodities of low or high respiration cargo including Asparagus, Avocado, Blueberry, Peach, Litchi, Organic Grape etc.

Utilising the patented Maxtend Controller, patented CO2 scrubber system, choice of GEM system and trip datalogging capability, Maxtend® is in control of your produce every step of the way.

Container is firstly leak tested to ensure the leakage rate is less than cargo respiration rate.

The setpoint is achieved fast without need for gas flushing by the natural consumption of oxygen by the high respiration cargo. This is typically achieved within 48 to 72 hours.

The complete Maxtend® system then accurately maintains the desired setpoint based utilising the fully patented Maxtend Controller and scrubber system process as per Maxtend® CA:

  • O2 depletion by cargo respiration
  • O2 increase by fresh air injection using valves
  • CO2 depletion by fresh air injection using valves and additional control if required by passive (controlled absorption rate) CO2 scrubbers or GEM
  • CO2 increase by cargo respiration
    Ethylene Absorber can be added to assist in protecting the cargo during the initial O2 pull-down stage

An active atmosphere control system that sets the benchmark for controlled atmosphere service and results. The GEM system is an active CA system for retrofit to Carrier’s Primeline Reefer containers.

The advanced GEM patented membrane technology independently controls the O2 and CO2 balance and replaces Maxtend’s traditional CO2 scrubber system

CO2 Absorber (Scrubber)

Maxtend's CO2 absorption (scrubbing) system uses patented membrane technology to ensure the appropriate concentration  of CO2 in the reefer container.

The membrane allows controlled-rate absorption of CO2 to enable Maxtend® to deliver the CO2 level required for a particular produce.

The CO2 scrubbers use Hydrated Lime as the active ingredient and  are packed into open cardboard cartons for rigidity. A pre-determined number of CO2 scrubbers are placed over the cargo inside the container at the time of cargo stuffing.

Step 1 - Leak Testing

A new leak testing system developed specifically for Maxtend® allows direct measurement of container leakage rate.

Step 2 - Commissioning of Maxtend System

After the container is loaded with cargo the Maxtend® system is commissioned.
  • CO2 scrubber pads (or GEM) are placed in position while loading
  • A plastic sealing curtain is fitted to prevent atmosphere leakage
  • Initial atmosphere established by gas flushing of container
  • Controller Installed and final pre check testing completed
  • Safety warning notice is placed on container prior to shipping

Step 3 - Removal of the Disposable Elements by the Importer

  • Open only the right-hand door and then loosen sealing curtain and allow it to drop away
  • Wait for 15 minutes for the oxygen level within the container to stabilize before opening both doors & entering
  • Carbon dioxide scrubber pads (if utilised) removed and discarded
  • Cargo unloaded from the container

Removal of Remaining Items by Shipping Line

  • Maxtend® controller assembly removed and retained for collection by Maxtend® representative
  • Drain plugs removed
  • Warning labels removed

The Maxtend Secura System is an affordable alternative to our Maxtend CA system, suited to high respiration cargo such as banana and mango.

The Maxtend® Secura System uses the proven Maxtend® CA Controller and patented CO2 scrubbing system and is ideal for high respiration produce that consumes oxygen faster, establishing the desired setpoint by produce respiration without gas flushing.

The Maxtend® Controller then accurately maintains the setpoint of oxygen and carbon dioxide during the entire voyage.

The Maxtend® Secura System retains Maxtend's unique One-Trip concept and can be easily fitted to any standard reefer container that has passed our leak testing criteria.

It is ideal for cargo such as Banana, Avocado and Mango where setpoints can be achieved in a relatively short time by produce respiration.

The Maxtend RA System is perfectly suited to low value cargo such as lettuce, where accuracy is less important than competitive price.

Maxtend® RA utilises the same high technology active sensor and controller as the premium CA system to deliver a beneficial atmosphere range once target O2 level is established through produce respiration.

The Maxtend® RA system also ensures CO2 level does not increase beyond the optimum predetermined level through controlled absorption by utilising the patented CO2 scrubber system.
